Application Tips:
Faculty can only sponsor one apprentice per semester or summer.
Make sure that you have a well-developed faculty-student mentoring plan that makes it clear how often the pair will meet, how you will work together, and what the goals for the semester or summer are.
It should be clear that the student is undertaking his or her original project (though it could be part of a larger project), not simply serving as an assistant to the faculty mentor.
The nature of the mentor-apprentice relationship, including expectations of performance and safeguards when experiments don't go as planned should be included in the faculty mentor's letter of reference and the student's essay on the faculty mentor-apprentice relationship (you should discuss specifically how you will engage each other as a team).
The student biosketch should discuss specific skills and knowledge that will help him or her undertake the project successfully. This should be more specific than describing oneself as “hardworking and dedicated.”
